Building Resilience through story-telling and music!
Pete the Cat is a fabulous story with a catchy tune that’s very contagious! Here’s a cat in his brand new white shoes, who steps in strawberries and now he has red shoes! But, he doesn’t cry, he makes the best of it and sings a song about loving his red shoes. This theme continues as Pete continues to “step in it”, but each time he makes the most of it! He is one resilient cat! This is a great way to show kids how to re-frame.
When you’re having negative thoughts about a situation, see if you can look on the bright side and find a positive way of looking at the same situation. Your thoughts affect your feelings which affect your behaviour so if you can change your negative thoughts to positive thoughts, you’re going to feel better and act happier. Of course, we still want children to know that it’s okay to cry when they’re feelings or body are really hurt, but when it comes to the small stuff it’s important that they learn at an early age how to “let it go”.
Pete The Cat is a great story to introduce children to the idea of changing unhelpful thoughts to helpful thoughts and a useful story for parents to refer to. The next time your child is upset about something on the relatively small scale, introduce some humour, sing the song “I Love My White Shoes” and ask your child how Pete the Cat might handle this situation… You may also be interested in reading my other articles on developing resiliency in children and building resilience by helping children discover their learning strengths.

What a great story. My anxiety prone daughter and I watched this together and talked about how we could try to be more like Pete the Cat! So simply – yet so effective.
